Here we are, alone again. It's all so slow, so heavy, so sad... I'll be old soon. Then at last it will be over. So many people have come into my room. They've talked. They haven't said much. They've gone away. They've grown old, wretched, sluggish, each in some corner of the world.

The universe Guzmán introduces us to is overwhelmingly masculine. He is known for his black and white sketches, whose style has been inspired by such diverse sources as childhood cartoons, Aztec handwriting and Mexican painters - José Clemente Orozco in particular. Guzmán sculptural style is a direct extension of his drawing style. The sculptures are made of mundane materials, old or new, and are often created for a specific venue, taking its history, interspersed with Guzmán’s history, as its starting point – often also based on his great interest in music.

Daniel Guzmán (1964), Ensayo I (canción mixteca), 2008, Digital video on DVD

In an overall perspective Guzmán’s universe is a mixture of harsh reality and wondrous imagination, where the Mexican heritage is obvious in the references to Mexican mythological figures, history and religion. At the same time the works must be regarded in a broader perspective of western pop culture, with references to international rock icons such as Kiss and Iggy Pop.
